WEEK 8 : NANOTECH + ART

 

Nanotechnology is “use of matter on atomic, molecular, and supramolecular scales for industrial purposes.” Something that most people have only herd of or seen on sifi movies where they can actually be seen because there is so many of them. However we see nanotechnology on a daily biases even though we have no idea that it is there. There are many different industries that use nanotechnologies in their products in order to make them better. Some of these industries include the food, agricultural, automotive, and medical industries. Food industries use them to give products more nutrients or flavors than they would without them. The agricultural industries use them to make fruits and vegetables last longer so they can stay on shelfs at store without going bad before the consumer can buy them take them home and eat them. The medical industries has been able to use them to target specific cells or tissue in the body while avoiding the healthy cells. This has been one of the biggest discoveries for man kind, as it will lead in the future to better medicinal resolutions to life threating diseases like cancer. The automotive industry has developed numerous amounts of products that use nanotechnology to repel water and dirt making them great use for detailer and car enthusiast.

MARTA DE MENEZES; Lunchtime Talk

     Marta de Menezes was born in 1975, she is a Portuguese artist, with a Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Lisbon and a Masters from the University of Oxford. She is director of Cultivamos Cultura, the leading institution dedicated to experimental art in Portugal. She also created Ectopia, Femeeting, and a couple other organizations. All the organizations are dedicated to facilitate the collaborative work between artists and scientists. I was very impressed how many organizations Marta was able to create and still currently manage, all in order to help out artists and sciences express their work. I never thought there could be such a close connection between science and art as some of the pieces that Marta showed us. Once of the pieces that intrigued me the most was ecosystem in a glass jar in the first picture below in upper right corner.
