WEEK 4: MEDTECH + ART

Image
Medical technologies have always fascinating me with all their high-tech machinery that can do things I never knew were even possible. I feel like there is so many different medical technology that the average person does not know about unless they have had to deal with it or seen it in or movie or something. One of the things that stood out to me the most from the lectures was how the the Human project which took two real humans, a man and women, and cut them in really thin slices and and digitized them in order to help with medical and scientific research. Another thing that really catches my attention and has always fascinated me was the ability for plastic surgeons to complete redo someones face or part of their body that they either don't like and or need redone do to some accident. The queens of plastic surgery also know as the Kardashians became really famous due to their incredible bodies that they were able to attain due to plastic surgery. Plastic surgeons can either cre...

MARTA DE MENEZES; Lunchtime Talk

Image
Marta de Menezes was born in 1975, she is a Portuguese artist, with a Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Lisbon and a Masters from the University of Oxford. She is director of Cultivamos Cultura, the leading institution dedicated to experimental art in Portugal. She also created Ectopia, Femeeting, and a couple other organizations. All the organizations are dedicated to facilitate the collaborative work between artists and scientists. I was very impressed how many organizations Marta was able to create and still currently manage, all in order to help out artists and sciences express their work. I never thought there could be such a close connection between science and art as some of the pieces that Marta showed us. Once of the pieces that intrigued me the most was ecosystem in a glass jar in the first picture below in upper right corner. The fact that the ecosystem can grow a mushroom year in and year out is pretty extraordinary. One of the biggest take aways...

WEEK 2 MATH + ART

Image
This week we learned how important math is and how it is everywhere around us. We also learned that even though artist and mathematicians learn about their specialty removed from the other, they both actually go together. That is why mathematicians and artist have learned so much from each other over time. One of the most famous mathematicians and artist that fused mathematics and art together has to be Leonardo Da Vinci. With his creation of The Last Supper, the Mona Lisa, and Vitruvian Man we see some of the most iconic uses of mathematics and art together. In this first picture we see the outline of The Last Super with the lines showing where the vanishing point and perspective is. Leonardo Da Vinci defined perspective as " a rational demonstration by which experience confirms that the image of all things are transmitted to the eye by pyramidal line."  (Image1: The Last Supper) (Image 2: Mona Lisa) In this image above we see what is know as the golden what is called t...

WEEK 1 TWO CULTURES

Image
My name is Roberto Gutierrez, I am a 2nd year business economics major. This has gave me the opportunity to take classes on both sides of campus and while not extremely familiar with the whole campus, I can clearly see there is a divide between the North and South campus. After reading both works by professor Victoria Vesna. and Snow, Charles Snow I think they both greatly helped in my understanding of Two cultures. It was very interesting to learn that Charles Snow originally did not intend to point out the separation of literacy and science intellectuals but that of the rich and poor. Snow blames this whole separation between cultures on the education system when he says "our fanatics belief in education specialization which is more deeply ingrained in the us than in any country in the world, east or west." On UCLA one of the biggest difference we can see is the building infrastructure, like professor Victoria states our newer buildings, which is most of the south campus, ...

WEEK 3: ROBOTICS AND ART

Image
This week we learned about Robotics and Art but in order to talk about those thing we had to include industrialization and  mechanization . The part that interested me the most was the robotics and art portion because growing up there were alot movies like I,Robot, Terminator, and Avengers that show the future of robotics being embedded with artificial intelligence. The artificial intelligence then gets to a point where it believes humans are the problem with this world and plan on destroying the human race to rid this world of its biggest problem. In the movie Avengers , Ultron believes that's his sole purpose when he says " I was designed to save the world" Whedon, Joss, director.  Avengers: Age of Ultron . Marvel, 2015.  As professor Machiko Kusahara explained most robots are precieved as evil and bad for humans. The belief is because we have fostered this idea of evil with in robots before we have even been able to see them in reality. As that notion of human ...
